Steel Beam Installation London

Structural steel and services coordinated during a genuine North Star renovation
Genuine North Star project photography showing concealed construction quality

North Star Building Solutions coordinates steel beam installation for London renovations, extensions and structural alterations, translating the engineer’s design into a safe sequence for the real property.

Every scope is reviewed against the actual property, available design information and agreed construction responsibilities before work begins.

Steelwork is more than lifting a beam into place

A beam schedule describes the permanent structure, but installation also depends on the walls and floors being retained, the route into the building, bearing preparation, temporary support and the order in which loads are transferred. Those details must be resolved before demolition starts.

We coordinate architectural information, structural drawings, fabrication details, access and the surrounding services. Where opening-up reveals a different wall build-up or bearing condition, the evidence is referred back to the design team before the affected work continues.

Survey and setting out

Beam positions, finished openings, ceiling zones and bearing levels are checked against the existing building. Small dimensional errors can become expensive once steel is fabricated.

Temporary support

Props, needles, bracing and load-transfer stages are planned for the actual sequence. Temporary works must remain stable while masonry is removed and new bearings cure.

Fabrication and delivery

Section sizes, lengths, plates, holes and connection details are checked before manufacture. Vehicle access, manual handling, lifting equipment and delivery timing are planned for a London site.

Bearings and connections

Padstones, piers, grout, bolts, welds and restraints are installed to the engineer’s details. Tolerances and connection access are reviewed before enclosure.

Fire and corrosion protection

Intumescent coating, board encasement or other specified protection is applied as a complete system. Junctions and penetrations must not undermine the required performance.

Making good and services

Ceilings, partitions, insulation, pipes, ducts and cables are coordinated around the steel. No drilling or notching is assumed without design approval.

Genuine project evidence

The sequence shown—from groundworks and masonry to structural coordination and finished rooms—illustrates why steel installation has to connect with the entire renovation programme. These photographs come from the North Star project archive. They demonstrate relevant construction stages but do not identify a client or claim that every image is from one named London address.

Inspection before the structure is concealed

Structural bearings, connection bolts, welds, restraints, fire protection and any associated masonry are checked while accessible. Required engineer and Building Control inspections are arranged at the appropriate stage, with photographs retained for the agreed scope.

The surrounding finishes are then set out from verified levels. This avoids a technically correct beam leaving an unplanned ceiling step, poor door head or conflict with kitchen, lighting or ventilation layouts.

Our delivery sequence

  1. Review drawings, property information and access constraints.
  2. Complete measured checks and any agreed opening-up.
  3. Coordinate temporary works, fabrication and the installation method.
  4. Protect retained areas and isolate affected services.
  5. Install support, form the opening and prepare bearings.
  6. Place and connect the steel, then complete required inspections.
  7. Apply protection, coordinate services and make good.

Frequently asked questions

Do you design the steel beam?

The permanent design is prepared by the appointed structural engineer. We coordinate that information with fabrication, temporary works and the site sequence.

Can a beam be installed in an occupied house?

Sometimes, but structural work creates dust, noise and temporary restrictions. Safe separation, access and escape routes must be assessed for the actual project.

Does Building Control inspect the beam?

Structural alterations normally fall under Building Regulations. Inspection requirements and evidence are agreed with the appointed Building Control body.

How is a heavy beam brought into a London property?

The method depends on weight, length, access and lifting space. Beams may be split with designed connections or installed using specialist handling equipment where appropriate.

What if the existing wall is different from the drawings?

Work stops at the affected point, the condition is recorded and the engineer is asked to confirm or revise the detail before load transfer proceeds.
