Load paths, temporary support and finished rooms coordinated together
Structural Alterations Hammersmith

North Star Building Solutions delivers structural alterations in Hammersmith homes, coordinating measured surveys, engineer information, temporary works, steel installation, building services and the finished architectural layout.
Every scope is reviewed against the actual property, available design information and agreed construction responsibilities before work begins.
The opening is only one part of the structural change
Hammersmith terraces, villas, mansion flats and converted houses often contain several generations of alteration. Chimney removals, earlier openings, split floor levels and shared walls can change the load path from what a simple plan suggests. Selective opening-up is agreed before fabrication so bearing conditions, floor direction and concealed services are recorded rather than guessed.
A proposed open-plan room is set out against the final ceiling, kitchen, doors, lighting and ventilation as well as the engineer’s drawings. This prevents a technically adequate beam from leaving an avoidable ceiling step, blocked duct route or poorly aligned opening.
Busy streets, controlled parking and narrow side access affect how props, steel sections and waste move through the property. The installation method is therefore developed with the structural design, not left until materials arrive.
Existing structure survey
Wall thickness, floor direction, chimneys, previous steelwork, cracks and bearing locations are checked through measured survey and agreed opening-up.
Temporary support design
Props, needles, bracing and load-transfer stages are coordinated for the retained building and the working space available.
Steelwork and bearings
Sections, plates, bolts, welds, padstones and tolerances follow the engineer’s information and remain visible for required inspections.
Controlled demolition
Masonry is removed in a planned sequence with dust, vibration, falling material and occupied areas actively managed.
Service diversions
Pipes, cables, radiators, alarms and ventilation crossing the work are isolated and rerouted through confirmed zones.
Fire protection and finishes
Structural fire protection, plastering, joinery, floors and decoration are rebuilt around verified lines and levels.
Genuine project evidence
The sequence shows masonry, structural coordination, first fix and completed finishes relevant to a carefully controlled structural alteration. These photographs come from the North Star project archive. They demonstrate relevant construction stages but do not identify a client or claim that every image is from one named London address.

Hold points before structure is concealed
Bearings, connections, restraints, fire protection and any associated masonry are checked while accessible. Engineer and Building Control inspections are arranged at the required stage, with photographs retained for the agreed scope.
If opening-up reveals weak masonry, an unexpected void or a different load path, the affected operation is made safe and the designer is asked to confirm the next step before permanent work continues.
Our delivery sequence
- Review the desired layout, surveys and design status.
- Complete measured checks and agreed opening-up.
- Coordinate permanent structure and temporary support.
- Plan access, protection, service isolation and waste routes.
- Install support and form the opening in stages.
- Install permanent steelwork and complete inspections.
- Fire protect, reconnect services, make good and hand over.
Official local checks before construction
Property-specific planning history, conservation status and any Article 4 restriction should be confirmed with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham before the construction route is fixed. The council publishes urban design and conservation guidance, including information on conservation areas, listed buildings, trees and basement controls. Planning, Building Regulations, Party Wall procedures, freeholder consent and highway permissions remain separate matters.
Frequently asked questions
Can every load-bearing wall be removed?
No. Feasibility depends on the complete load path, foundations, retained walls, services, access and the structural engineer’s design.
Who designs the steelwork?
The appointed structural engineer prepares the permanent structural design. North Star coordinates that information with fabrication, temporary works and the construction sequence.
Can structural work be completed in an occupied house?
Sometimes, but dust, noise, restricted access and temporary support must be assessed. Vacant working may be safer and more efficient for a major alteration.
Will the finished ceiling be level?
The proposed finish is coordinated early, but period properties often have existing variation. Any transition, bulkhead or ceiling zone should be agreed before steel is ordered.
Is a Party Wall notice always required?
Not always. The appointed surveyor or legal adviser should assess the proposed work and its relationship to shared structures and boundaries.
